The 50th Anniversary of the Commission

The Agreement for the establishment of the Commission was approved by the Council at its 44th Session (1965) under the authority of the Conference (Eleventh Session, 1961) and on the recommendation of a Special Conference held in Beirut (1965). The Agreement came into force on 21 February 1967. The 20th Session of the Commission, held in Cairo from 18-20 December 1994, considered renaming the Region "Central Region" and consequently modifying the name of the Commission and the Agreement. It also considered modifying the definition of the Region covered by the Agreement to make it possible for Djibouti, Eritrea and Ethiopia to become Members of the Commission.
