Iraq is located in the Middle East, bordering the Persian Gulf, between Iran and Kuwait. Iraq is bounded on the north by Turkey, Syria on northwest; on the west by Jordan, Saudi Arabia on the south and southwest, Kuwait on the south and on the east by Iran. Iraq has a total area of 437,072 km2.

Iraq mostly broad plains; reedy marshes along Iranian border in south with large flooded areas; mountains along borders with Iran and Turkey, highest point unnamed peak; 3,611 m but this peak is not Gundah Zhur 3,607 m or Kuh-e Hajji-Ebrahim 3,595 m.

The climate in Iraq is mostly desert; mild to cool winters with dry, hot, cloudless summers; northern mountainous regions along Iranian and Turkish borders experience cold winters with occasionally heavy snows that melt in early spring, sometimes causing extensive flooding in central and southern Iraq.

Iraq's economy is dominated by the oil sector, which has traditionally provided about 95% of foreign exchange earnings. In addition to oil, natural gas, phosphate and sulfur are considered the main natural resources. Agricultural products are wheat, barley, rice, vegetables, dates, cotton; cattle, sheep and poultry.

Iraq does not harbour Desert Locust breeding areas; the Plant Protection Division of the Ministry of Agriculture based in Baghdad is responsible for Desert Locust control in case of an emergency situation.
